How I Met My Husband Online

After I replied to his first "Hi," I was still very cautious.

At that time, I only knew a few simple English phrases:

"How are you?"

"I'm fine, thank you. And you?"

That was almost everything I could understand and say in English.

Talking to a man living on the other side of the world was completely new to me.

After we had been chatting for a while, he told me that he wanted to show me he was serious about getting to know me.

To prove it, he left the dating website and even sent me a screenshot showing that he had closed his account.

That surprised me.

I thought that if someone was willing to stop looking for other people and focus on one relationship, then he must be taking it seriously.

Even so, I was not fully convinced.

I had heard many stories about the internet.

People often said that online profiles could be fake. The person in the photo might not be the person behind the screen.

So after a few days, I asked him to FaceTime me.

I wanted to see for myself if he was real.

That video call left a strong impression on me.

The first thing I noticed was his smile.

He had a warm and friendly smile.

His voice was gentle and calm.

What touched me the most was that he always tried to make me feel comfortable.

He knew that I could not speak English well.

So he often used Google Translate when we talked.

I spoke Vietnamese.

He translated.

I felt that he was trying to enter my world instead of forcing me into his.

After some time, I told my mother about this new friend I had met online.

I asked her if she thought he could be trusted.

I even asked her to look at his photo and give me her opinion.

My mother looked at his picture for a long time.

Then she said:

"I don't know exactly what kind of person he is. But he has a kind face and an honest smile. I think you can be friends with him."

At that moment, I had no idea that my mother's simple words would become the beginning of a journey that would change my life forever.
